Skin cyst can develop on any part of the body. Most are benign and can be left alone. Some are removed as they will grow and often get infected or may rupture. The whole cyst is removed and the wound sutured. Removal is usually done when there is no infection.
Ingrown nails (onychocryptosis) are common and most often affect the big toe. The most common cause is improper trimming of the nails or tight-fitting footwear. Ingrown nails can irritate the skin and can get infected.
Common mole appears during childhood and adolescence. Moles become larger or darker during teenage years, during sun exposure or during pregnancy. Common moles are symmetrical and have a uniform colour. They are harmless and do not require removal. They can be removed by

A skin biopsy is performed to remove a sample of the skin lesion and this is done under local anaesthesia. The skin sample is then sent for histology to determine or confirm the diagnosis. Skin biopsy can be
- Shave biopsy where a tangential shave is performed to remove the protruding part of a skin lesion. A deep shave biopsy removes both the protruding part as well as part of the deep tissue
- Punch biopsy where a part or whole of the skin lesion is removed with a skin biopsy punch
- Incisional biopsy where part of the skin lesion is removed in an elliptical incision
- Excisional biopsy where the whole skin lesion is removed
